Meet a Lakers Sponsor – Active Accounting Group

He’s only been a member of Lakers Basketball Club for the past 24 months but already Brett Walker has become a coach, scorer, driver, manager and sponsor of a club he describes as “well above the others”.

Transitioning after years of being a soccer dad, the father-of-three became a ‘Laker’ when his youngest son was looking to enter a team in the 2022/23 summer comp.

After a succession of calls, emails and texts being dispersed amongst the association, he landed in the hands of the Lakers family, a move he says he’s grateful took place.

Fast-forward almost 12 months and Brett is quickly becoming a familiar friendly face around the courts of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

With one son and his eight former-soccer mates all playing for Lakers now, Brett has been brushing up on his knowledge of the game he once played at the same Broadmeadow Stadium years ago.

And, while he admits he’s still reacquainting himself with terms like ‘rebounds’ and ‘assists’ and ‘fouls’, it is accounting that Brett knows best.

The son of an accountant, Brett has adopted the steadfast principles of financial wealth management he has learned over three decades, while adding a commitment to good old-fashioned service – a business model he’s proudly making a success of.

He is part of a Broadmeadow-based business called Active Accounting Group.

Based on Brunker Road, the family-run business covers tax planning, profitability and performance measurement, asset protection and structuring, self-managed super, sales and succession planning.

Active Accounting and its team stand by five key commitments: To always be Responsive, Progressive, Empowering, Collaborative and Genuine.

“We live by a really simple business rule,” Brett says. “We’re service based. So if you call us or email us, we get back to you the same day.

“We’re very personable and we’re happy to do everything we can for our clients.”

Like sport itself, Brett has learned working with clients is like becoming a supportive team mate.

“I always say to my clients, I’m your wingman or your sounding board. When something goes wrong, you just get on the phone to me and I’ll try and fix it.”

And, when it comes to getting the most out of your tax return, Active Accounting Group is your go-to.

“We’re very good with tax and tax planning and we’ve got a really good system that makes sure our business clients aren’t paying anything they don’t need to be paying, and that they’re not missing out on anything that they should be getting from the government either,” says Brett.

“We do lots of research and development and grant work, as well as rebates from the tax office, and we’ve got an extensive checklist that the staff do, and then I do at the end of the job. That’s when we implement every trick we’ve ever learned and we tick them off just to make sure that we’re getting everything for our clients.

“I think between that and the service side of things and just being available whenever anything goes wrong, it’s pretty successful.

“It’s a plan that works really well.”
